Google Ads vs Facebook Ads for local businesses

When to use Google Ads, when to use Facebook and Instagram ads, and how local businesses in Canada can combine them without wasting budget.

Google Ads: catch people who are ready

Someone searching "winter tires near me" or "web designer Moncton" already has a need. Search ads put you in front of them at that moment. Call ads and location extensions make it easy to phone or find you.

  • Best for urgent or high-intent services
  • Pays per click, so keyword choice matters
  • Needs a landing page that answers the search

Facebook and Instagram: create demand

Meta ads reach people by location, interests and behaviour, before they search. They work well for seasonal offers, events, new locations and visual products.

  • Best for offers, events and visual businesses
  • Creative matters more than on Google
  • Retargeting brings back people who visited but didn't book

How to split a small budget

Start with the channel closest to the sale. For most service businesses that is Google Search. Add Meta once tracking is in place, and move budget each month toward whichever channel brings cheaper customers.

Set up tracking before you spend

Without tracking you are guessing. Before launching, set up:

  • Google Ads conversion tags and the Meta Pixel
  • Call tracking or click-to-call tracking
  • Form and booking confirmations counted as conversions
  • A simple monthly report: spend, leads, bookings and cost per customer

Common mistakes

  • Boosting posts with no clear offer or audience
  • Sending ads to the homepage instead of a focused landing page
  • Judging ads by clicks and likes instead of customers
  • Turning ads off before they have enough data to optimise
